Kool & the Gang, one of the most influential funk bands of the '70s (and one of the most popular R&B groups of the '80s after their breakout hit “Celebration”) originally started as a jazz band. That goes some distance toward explaining the group’s tight-knit chops, as well as their ability to improvise when the mood struck. Brothers Robert and Ronald Bell started playing together in the Jazziacs in the early 1960s with a bunch of their neighborhood friends. As their musical horizons expanded, they came to re-christen themselves the Soul Town Band.
Finally settling on the moniker Kool & The Gang, their eponymous debut album hit both the pop and R&B charts. Their sixth LP Wild and Peaceful, gave them the “overnight” success that belied their years of work on the fringes. Several years, and a fair number of R&B chart hits later, the band took the tune “Celebration” to the pop and R&B charts and never looked back, notching seven consecutive platinum albums. Just as funky (and sampled nearly as often) as James Brown or Parliament, the group has expressed a mastery of soul, R&B and funk over the span of five decades.
This Sound + Vision set not only captures the band’s career sonically on a pair of CDs, but it gathers virtually every video in the band’s career on the DVD. This collection is encoded in NTSC for Region 1 DVD players (US and Canada). The CDs, of course, will play everywhere.
