Directed by Stephane Tchal-Gadjieff and Jean Jacques Flori , the first element of this Sound + Vision release is the definitive film on the so-called “black president” and creator of Afrobeat. Fela Kuti’s influence on black contemporary music cannot be overestimated; virtually all modern forms of black music (from funk to electronic) owe something to his irresistible Afrobeat groove. Fela recorded over 70 albums during his lifetime, all mythic. For most of his adult life, he fought against political corruption in his native Nigeria (until 1997, when he died of AIDS at the age of 58). The film includes previously unreleased versions of “ITT,” “Power Show,” “Army Arrangement,” and a live version of “Authority Stealing.” Accompanying the DVD is a 2-disc collection of Kuti’s best-known songs. This collection is encoded in NTSC for Region 1 DVD players (US and Canada). The CDs, of course, will play everywhere.
Limited-edition box sets of Fela vinyl are also available through Hip-O Select.
DID YOU KNOW? Fela Kuti not only made over 70 albums, but he had 27 wives.
