It’s hard to believe that there are still people out there who don’t know about Nick Drake. Only three albums came out during his short lifetime, and each one was exquisitely crafted, though the third, Pink Moon, differed markedly from its predecessors, Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter. Cherished by a fairly small group of devotees, Nick’s music was given a huge boost in popularity by one of the strangest avenues imaginable: a Volkswagen commercial. It’s an irony that Nick would likely have appreciated.
This latest addition to the canon, Made To Love Magic, is a collection of songs recorded in a variety of settings between 1968 and 1974, with some additional recording by Nick’s college friend (and occasional string arranger) Robert Kirby in 2003. Many of the songs originally produced by the legendary Joe Boyd and engineered by Boyd’s longtime comrade John Wood have been remixed by Wood, while others appear on this collection for the first time.
The love and care that went into this album, exemplified by the tasteful and subtle enhancements by Kirby and Wood, is evident throughout. This imported vinyl version of Made to Love Magic captures the warmth implicit in analog recordings.
DID YOU KNOW? Nick Drake was born in Burma.
