Pops, We Love You, first issued in 1979, is a fitting tribute to Berry Gordy Sr., the father of the founder of Motown Records and a man beloved by both musicians and friends. “Pops,” as he was known to all who came through Motown, died the year before at the age of 90.
The senior Gordy pitched in from the very beginning at Motown, helping his namesake son to build the Hitsville studio and offering counsel to rising stars. When that young talent became superstars, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder did not forget, and recorded the album’s title song in his honor.
Newer stars to Motown were engaged by “Pops”’s warmth and steady wisdom. Jermaine Jackson, Tata Vega and the Commodores contributed to the album. With such a strong lineup, though, the album never made it to CD – until now. Exclusive to this LP only are such tracks as Smokey’s “Mother’s Son”’ a duet between Ross and Gaye, “I’ll Keep A Light In My Window”; and the remixed and re-edited version of Gaye’s “God Is Love,” originally from his album What’s Going On.
As Gordy Sr. was quoted on the album cover, “You can give without loving, but you can’t love without giving.” Clearly, the artists involved in this album took his words to heart.
Did You Know? Pops' daughter, Anna, co-wrote the song "God Is Love" on this record with her then-husband, Marvin Gaye.
