Four short years after The American Breed had a national hit with “Bend Me, Shape Me,” four of that band’s members found themselves in a new musical venture. Originally known as Smoke, the band underwent several changes, including personnel and another pair of names before settling on their final moniker: Rufus. One might not have expected the funk band that later sprang to national prominence covering Stephen Stills’ “Love The One You’re With,” but on their eponymous 1973 debut, Rufus was still in the process of defining who they were. Their cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Maybe Your Baby” was a start, but the best (commercially speaking) was yet to come.
DID YOU KNOW? Chaka Khan’s real name is Yvette Marie Stevens.
