It was difficult to capture a live Who show in all its windmill-strummin’, drum-kickin’, amp-smashin’ glory, but 1970’s Live At Leeds did a pretty good job. If Eddie Cochran weren’t already spinning in his grave at 78 RPM due to Blue Cheer’s cover of his “Summertime Blues,” the Who’s version would certainly get him up to speed. The band also showed its roots in a cover of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates’ “Shakin’ All Over,” better known in America by the Guess Who (no relation). With epic versions of “My Generation” and “Magic Bus,” this record kicks, um, the jams out. Our imported disc is pressed on 180-gram vinyl in Europe and replicates the fine warm sound only analog can bring.
DID YOU KNOW? Unlike its author, “Summertime Blues” can’t be kept down. Country Superstar Alan Jackson recorded a version in 1994 that hit the top of the country charts.
