As the mid-Fifties ratcheted up into full gear, so did rock and roll. As had been true with urban blues, Chess was right at the head of the list when it came to embracing the new sounds sweeping America. Not only did they have their blues stable pumping out the hits, they also signed such doo-wop luminaries as the Moonglows and the Monotones, and their young rock roster included both Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry.
This second five-CD box set (of three) covers the decade between 1955 and 1964, and includes such indispensable tunes as “Little Red Rooster,” “Book Of Love,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Blue Velvet,” “Sweet Little Sixteen,” and dozens more.
With notes by Colin Escott and mastering by Universal’s Erick Labson, this set is a must-have for rock and blues fans alike.
Chess Records founder Leonard Chess’ started out as a scrap metal dealer during the Depression.
