Chaka Khan’s on-again-off-again affair with Rufus got what was nearly the last wind in its sails with 1981’s Camouflage. Having sat out the previous album, 1980’s Party ‘Til You’re Broke, to concentrate on her burgeoning solo career (her 1980 album Naughty had hit #6 on the Black Album chart), Khan returned for one more album. Playing out the end of a contract with MCA, the band was soon headed to join Chaka at her new label, even though they didn’t have the benefit of her services for their first album there. Musical tastes were changing in the 80s, and the disco-funk mix that had served Rufus so well just a few years earlier wasn’t the multi-chart success it once had been. Despite that Camouflage yielded a Top Ten Black Singles charting tune (“Sharing The Love”), and the album managed to make it to #15 on the Black Album chart.
DID YOU KNOW? Chaka Khan was only 20 when she joined Rufus.
