Daryl “Captain” Dragon and Toni Tennille were two of the most visible pop stars of the mid-1970s. Daryl was born into a musical family (his father, Carmen, was a noted conductor and composer, and his brother, Dennis, was founder of the Surf Punks), and toured for a period with the Beach Boys, who gave him his nickname. Toni also joined the Beach Boys touring band, and their professional relationship turned personal.
In 1973, they pressed up a single, which soon led to a recording contract with A&M. Their 1975 debut album was a smash, as you might have guessed from its title track: “Love Will Keep Us Together.”
They followed up that album with a re-recording of the debut disc in Spanish, which makes Song Of Joy their true second release. Unlike many performers, C&T didn’t suffer from the dreaded “sophomore jinx.” The album made it to number nine of the pop album charts, and yielded such hits as “Angel Face,” “Muskrat Love,” and a creditable remake of the Miracles’ “Shop Around.”
Did You Know? Toni’s real name is Cathryn Antoinette Tennille.
