Right about the time every aspiring electric guitarist was learning the opening licks to “Stairway To Heaven,” every aspiring acoustic guitarist was learning the opening licks to “John Barleycorn.” In the wake of Blind Faith, Winwood was still under contract as an artist to Island Records, and his first “solo” album rather quickly morphed into a new Traffic album. The title track was an old folk song rescued from relative obscurity by a group called The Watersons, who included it on their Frost And Fire album, Melody Maker’s Folk Album Of The Year For 1965. Traffic adopted a surprisingly simple arrangement and made it one of the FM hits of 1970. The album intimated songs on discs yet to come with the jazz-inflected instrumental “Glad.” Our imported version is pressed on 180-gram vinyl in Europe and replicates the fine warm sound only analog can bring.
DID YOU KNOW? Chris Wood was the only original member of Traffic not to release a solo album.
