At an early point in their career (before they had a commercial release), the band’s name was actually Ask Rufus. [Don’t ask me.] But this album wasn’t about going backward, no way. In fact, the band managed to stay out of the studio during the Bicentennial and take their first extended break from recording. When the band returned in 1977, America was in the throes of Disco Fever, and Rufus was embraced warmly by black radio programmers, who gave the group a pair of Top Three hits: “Hollywood” and the chart-topping “At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up).” On the strength of those singles, the disc topped the Black Album charts and peaked at a very respectable #12 on the Pop Album charts.
