If you’re heading out on a road trip anytime soon, you are hereby ordered to put this album in your satchel. This record captures that elusive Route 66 vibe, with a little of the Mississippi Delta and the heartland thrown in for good measure. At turns contemplative and outgoing, Blue Guitar [as it’s known to its fans (of which we here at Select all are)] weaves a rich musical tapestry.
From the Nerves to the Plimsouls to his solo work, Peter Case has always had a knack for a pop melody, and a sufficiently interesting take on life to write lyrics that count.
This album, originally released in 1989, was his second solo effort (and perhaps the longest album title of that year to boot). Accompanying Case are such noteworthy players as David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, Benmont Tench of the Heartbreakers, Ry Cooder, David Lindley, T Bone Burnett and Mitchell Froom.
As might be expected from a man of his many talents, the album is comprised of a variety of styles, from the acoustic blues of “Charlie James” to the folk inflection of “Entella Hotel” to the rocking favorite “Put Down The Gun.” Little wonder that Bruce Springsteen told a Rolling Stone interviewer in 1989 that he was listening to Peter Case more than anyone else that year.
Remastered from the original tapes in 2004 by the Grammy®-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen, the album has a richness that it hasn’t ever had on CD heretofore.
