For their sixth album, Rufus hooked up with producer Roy Halee, probably best known for his long association with Paul Simon (having won four Grammys with Simon and Garfunkel). Instead of Tower of Power, the band Seawind provided the horn support on this album. The result sort of prefigured the smooth-jazz Wave-meets-Quiet-Storm sound that found a strong resonance at radio a few years hence with Sade, Bobby Caldwell and Smokey Robinson among others. It was a solid album (“Stay” hit #3 on the charts, and “Blue Love” managed to graze the lower reaches of the Top 40), but it might have been just a little bit ahead of its time. It sure does sound good today, though.
