By now, we’re in the mid-Sixties, and pop side of Chess is struggling against the younger sounds of Motown and the tide of the British Invasion. Though UK bands such as The Rolling Stones and the Animals worshipped (and often covered) Chess blues artists, the label itself was not reaching the commercial success it had in earlier years. Chuck Berry did get his first #1 hit during this period, though, with “My Ding-A-Ling.”
This third five-CD box set covers the decade between 1965 and 1975, and is comprised of three music CDs, interviews with Phil and Marshall Chess, and a CD-ROM featuring a discography, label history, and videos.
With notes by Colin Escott and mastering by Universal’s Erick Labson, this set is a must-have for rock and blues fans alike.
