Shawn:

My favorite would have to be Black Magic, I just love the lighting effect. Ridin' High would be my second choice...I love the hat and scarves look.

Favorite Album Cover of MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS

That's a hot one to pick but "Just One Look".... "H=E=A=T * W=A=V=E"

Like the #1 song, "Heat Wave", the same-titled album has a hot/hot/hot cover . Like the song, even the album cover is burnin'... desire... burnin'... flame... burnin'... high blood pressure... burnin'....! The burnt orange background wall gives the effect of h-e-a-t ! With "Heat Wave", MRV established themselves as the #1 Girl Group all around the world ! And it was/is one of the most unusual album covers to show any artists -- especially girls -- from the back , in fact, bare back particularly with low, low-cut, low-to-the-waist dresses clearly indicating that the MRV girls were bra-less ! And, this was way before "Women's Lib" ! Their sexxxy, hot outfits in all white -- just like LANA TURNER in "The Postman Always Rings Twice" -- made the girls look all the sexxxier and hotter . Add "Sugar and Spice" accessories -- we luv accessories -- like the white high heels and the white formal gloves and the white hoop earrings and.... we must presume, the (not shown) white lace panties !

Clearly, from this very unusual Motown pull-out-all-the-stops, rear-view, sexxxy album cover artwork, MARTHA REEVES has the best figure, butt THE VANDELLAS -- ANNETTE and ROZ -- never looked better . "Go ahead, girls!"

By the way, with the H-D-H-written and produced song "Heat Wave", this album -- not a SUPREMES album -- is the ONE that launched the songwriting career of HOLLAND-DOZIER-HOLLAND into high gear !

To see the cover of this hot "Heat Wave" album, U can visit:
www.STONEWALLvets.org/songsofStonewall-7.htm.
"Watchout!", it's hot . The girls are "Ridin' High" .

=AAG=

P.S. "Ain't that a b*tch" ! Shawn Bee asks us to name our fave MRV album cover and he don't name his!

My favorite cover would be "LIVE" because I saw them in concert around that time and they wore similar outfits--only they were shorter because it was during the daytime.
My second favorite is not exactly an album cover, but the back color photo of the inside booklet for the "Anthology" LP with the purple cover. That photo was sexy as hell.
I also liked the back cover photo for "Greatest Hits" because it's not always used.
I also discovered on the MBB that there were different MRV album covers in Europe and some of those were great.

Watchout! -- Martha looks great, and though the cover is fairly spare, it conveys energy due to the impression that the three women are grooving to the music.

Dance Party -- This in-concert shot should be an exciting representation of the choreography that symbolized Motown in the '60s; strangely, though they're on stage, the three women look somewhat static here; their stances do not suggest the hard dance beats on the recording or hinted at by the album title.

Natural Resources -- Despite the rainbow effect, this pose is less contrived than some of the others, and it also reflects Motown's move away from '60s sequins to '70s casual, a change that applied to both music and fashion as the decades shifted.

Greetings, Century:

"Dance Party" does not even have a photo on the cover! It is an artist's rendition/drawing of human "sticks" with heads dancing. The album cover U describe sounds like the one that Dr. Soul described: "MRV: Live!". It has many red tones and is very lively looking -- with MRV on stage! I like it.

To further solve the question, U can see the "Dance Party" album cover at:
www.STONEWALLvets.org/songsofStonewall-7.htm

P.S. Ask, if you ask me, the Euro cover was better!

"Who knew?" -- unless, for example, U live in the U.K. The standard on any of these American-based internet boards relating to Motown is regularly what was released in America -- where Motown was/is located -- and released by Motown Records. That is the official Motown catalogue.

What would help here is if ALL the HOS members on their 'profile' page simply filled in the space "location" . It would then appear below your moniker. Why not? Then, we'd at least know the general country, province or state -- maybe even the city where someone resides. It can breed comaradery, too. Don't worry! If U write London, for example, no one from HOS will come knocking at your door amongst millions of other doors. By the way, I thought Century was from Connecticut.

No doubt, Shawn, the Euro cover of "Dance Party" is better. If it has a picture, it's better.

Sorry for the confusion. I do remember the artwork on the original US album cover but was referring to the European twofer CD cover, which has been accessible more recently. Next time I'll be more specific.

Note: The rest of the original entire post got accidentally removed by me -- after I was still thrilled having just talked to the subject -- as I intended to 'quote' my own post but I hit the 'editing' function and.... Anyway, U can see parts of it in other's quoting of me below. (No, this was not edited 6 times. If it was, it would have fell far short of my record of 15!)

You know I always felt that Martha was very photogenic. I liked all of her album covers becasue she displays a smile that comes from the eyes and not only from the face.

I love the Ridin' High and Uk Dance Party album covers. US Brits also had photo covers on the "Greatest Hits" albums (we had 2) and there was another album issued called "Dancing In The Street" which was very tastefully designed too.

My vote is going to Dance Party though; it reminds me of seeing them on Ready Steady Go in 1965

P.S. - Johnny Raven -- and Shawn, two -- on the "Ridin' High" album cover, I also love those classy accessories of the top hat and the silk scarf, too. It was also a long overdue, grand acknowledgment by Motown of Diva REEVES. They should have given horses to the girls, too, but they saved the horses for THE MARVELETTES to "return" on a couple of years later.

The Impressions, one of Martha's favorite groups, also had an album titled "Riding High" but Curtis, Sam and Fred were photographed with classic sports cars. Sports cars would have made good props for Martha and the Vandellas on the "Riding High" album.
I suspect that the horses were used for that Marvelettes album cover photo because of the popularity at the time of Spaghetti and ultra violent westerns like "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" "100 Rifles" and "The Magnificent Seven Ride."

Yeah John and isn't that a still from "The Sounds Of Motown" show, i.e. the "Ready Steady Go" studio?

"At last my dreams came true...", they finally expanded the route of the "Crosstown" bus to include the Town Square on its stops!

Yes, and MARTHA really proved that photogenically in the enlarged spice jar with the supreme Motown gown, the hair up and the pretty smile -- and the likewise girls!

Xtown was really sayin' something!

....and the answer is: tune in next time!

Actually, Diva REEVES had just returned from an engagement in Arizona. Nonetheless, I posed the question about the favorite cover of an MRV album. Miss MARTHA stated that was "very interesting and thoughtful". And she candidly said that "She had never thought of that before but will give it some thought and tell me the next time". One album cover that was ruled 'one way out' was: "Martha & The Vandellas Greatest Hits" (from that horrible-looking Motown greatest hits series with no pix and just the song titles). MARTHA very smartly inquired, "C/d covers, too?" I said, of course! She mentioned "Live Wire: The Singles" as a possibility!

MRV is very excited about B.B. King's Nightclub on March 7th. They have already selected their "costiumes"! The show will have plenty of surprises, including parts of 3 songs (not usuually performed) done a cappella.

U-2 belong here, too. Remember, without the Motown distribution, U would not get any of these special, limited edition releases! And they -- UMRG -- does read the posts here to know what we're interested in having on c/d and our reactions!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh.... if it's a U.K. album, just specify U.K. (that's not a bad abbreviation). For example, "Dance Party" U.K. It will reduce confusion -- esp. when we mostly do not like the actual cover of the real "Dance Party" -- without our MRV girls on it! Plus, most of us know the two reasons why it was done that way!!

You're welcome, ! Shawn ! That was another example today of HOS friends contacting each other in times of need -- besides fun! I would have b-mailed the Administrators for U but b-mail is still not activated at the Town Square! I have to go now as I'm gonna try to find out Diva REEVES' favorite MRV album-c/d cover.

ACTUALLY, MARTHA REEVES -- though she surely does not look it (hello, that was the idea) -- actually is 'pregnant' on the album cover of "Sugar 'n' Spice", as MR was quoted above. Let's assume that she would know better if she was expecting with her son Eric Graham in that memorable picture than a fan decades later who wrongly states otherwise.

Next!
