A “complete” collection of the Rock ’N’ Roll Hall Of Famer’s first historic four years of recording, 1955 to 1958. The 48-track set is comprised of every master recorded by Diddley during this seminal period for Chess Records’ Checker label, plus 12 alternate takes. There are 8 previously unreleased tracks, highlighted by a pair of alternate takes of the artist’s eponymous and familiar debut hit single, a gorgeous ballad, “Our Love Will Never Go,” and a rough-hewed take on the Mickey & Sylvia hit “Love Is Strange.”
1955 to 1958 was a landmark time for rock ’n’ roll and Bo Diddley. In this brief period, Diddley recorded “Bo Diddley,” “I’m A Man,” “Pretty Thing,” “Bring It To Jerome,” “Who Do You Love,” “Mona,” “Before You Accuse Me,” and his biggest chart hit, “Say Man.” These are the recordings that laid the basis for the Bo Diddley legend and the songs and performances that spawned untold cover versions by The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Thorogood, Iggy & The Stooges, and so many others. The “Bo Diddley” beat established here was also appropriated for the rhythmic underpinning for hits by artists from Buddy Holly and Johnny Otis to The Doors and The Who. Plus, there is a case to be made that “Say Man” and Bo’s similar songs of the period were the first step in the revolution that eventually resulted in rap and hip-hop.
The music comes with complete discographical information, compiled from the Chess files, tape boxes, and with the input of Bo Diddley’s biographer and discographer, George R. White. The set also includes comprehensive liner notes by noted journalist/critic/disc jockey Chris Morris, and was produced by three-time Grammy Award-winning reissue producer Andy McKaie.
Simply, the impact of these 48 recordings cannot be overstated. These are among the most important rock ’n’ roll recordings ever, and this is the first time that they have been released in this fashion.
