Fusing reggae, rock and funk into one compelling musical package, Third World is more than just one of the top all-time reggae groups, it has become something of a tradition. The band clearly holds dear its cultural and ancestral roots, but they still push the envelope for reggae music worldwide. Not only are Third World one of the most influential reggae bands of all time, they are also among the longest-lived: over three decades, which is a pretty great run for any band, but they are still performing and extending their streak.

In 1973, teenager Stephen "Cat" Coore - at the time a member of the band Inner Circle - left that group, and with a fellow musician from another band, Colin Leslie, conceived and launched Third World. Their 1974 Kingston live premiere earned them great reviews and gigs, as they were the only group at the time made up of young, talented, trained musicians playing such a mesmerizing combination of reggae and funk. Not long thereafter, the band opened to great reviews for The Jackson 5, and then went off to tour in England, where they were noticed by musical visionary Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records. Blackwell offered them a record deal and a slot on a European tour opening for Bob Marley and The Wailers.

They released an eponymous debut album in 1976, followed closely the next year by the legendary album 96° In The Shade. The latter disc heralded the arrival of a new drummer, Willie Stewart, and a new lead singer (who had also been a member of Inner Circle), William “Bunny Rugs” Clark. The combination clicked, not only in Jamaica and the UK, where the band already had a significant and growing fan base, but in America also.

This version of 96° In The Shade features a previously-unreleased alternate extended mix of “Rhythm Of Life” and alternate mixes of “Feel A Little Better” and the band’s breakout smash, “1865 (96° In The Shade).” Make no mistake: 96° In The Shade is just plain hot.

Did You Know?: “Legsus” is reggae patois for walking, as in “I’m taking the Legsus.” You might call it “the previous generation of luxury.” Not.
